Home › Holding tank pumping
Some camps and lake lots around Sudbury, Manitoulin and French River use a holding tank instead of a regular septic system. This page explains how they differ, the City of Greater Sudbury pump-out rebate, and which listed companies say they pump holding tanks.
Because nothing leaves the tank on its own, a holding tank is pumped far more often than a septic tank. How often depends on the tank size and how much water goes into it.
The City of Greater Sudbury has a Residential Holding Tank Pump Out Rebate Program. It is for private property owners without municipal sewer who use a registered sewage holding tank. Septic tanks with a field or tile bed do not qualify. You apply after you have paid a licensed hauled liquid waste operator to empty the tank.
The city lists these conditions:
Fill in the rebate application form and attach the paid invoice from the hauler. The form says applications are taken all year, but a pump-out must be claimed by the end of February the following year. Questions: call 311 or email [email protected] (from the city page). Check the city page for current details before you apply.

No. The city says the program is for registered sewage holding tanks, not septic systems with a field or tile bed.
Pay a licensed hauler to empty the tank, then send the city's rebate application form with the paid invoice, proof of ownership and proof your taxes are up to date. The form says claims are due by the end of February the year after the pump-out. Details are on the City of Greater Sudbury site.
Public Health Sudbury & Districts says holding tanks (Class 5) are only allowed in certain situations where a regular septic system is not suitable because of lot limits. A permit is required. Ask PHSD about your property.
It depends on the tank size and how much water you use, so there is no single answer. A working high-level alarm tells you when it is getting full.
